What if you couldn’t give a friend a high five at school?

Well, if you go to East Shore Middle School, high fiving a friend could mean several different things. According to Principal Catherine Williams, “Potential consequences and disciplinary action may include parent conferences, detention, suspension and/or a request for expulsion from school”.

What if you wanted to give a friend a hug to console them if their grandparent passed away, shake their hand after they beat you at a chess tournament or high five them if they just won the Lacrosse championship? Well, if you go to this school in Connecticut, you can’t do any of that.

How would you feel if your principal decided that all forms of touching were “illegal”? This would be great for all the kids that get beat up at school or are black and blue after gym, but think of the long term effects it could have! You would have to keep your distance from people, just in case you accidentally touched them. It would be harder to look people in the eyes or to share a secret.

So what do you think?
